History / Summary
Issued to Sergeant G A Bartlett, 9th Battalion, AIF. Born in 1888 in Aberdeen, Scotland, George Anderson Bartlett served for a time in the British Army with the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was living in Australia and was working as a boiler maker when he enlisted in the AIF at Townsville, Queensland in August 1914. 657 Private G A Bartlett embarked at Brisbane aboard HMAT A5 Omrah with the 9th Battalion on 24 September 1914.
Slightly wounded on Gallipoli in April 1915, Bartlett went on to serve with the 9th Battalion on the Western Front and was promoted to corporal and then to sergeant before receiving the Military Medal (MM) for his bravery at Bullecourt on 6/7 May 1917.
Although detached to the 3rd Training Battalion for a period in September 1917, Bartlett continued to serve with the 9th Battalion for the rest of the war. He returned to Australia aboard the Kaiser-i-Hind in September 1918, after four years at war. George Bartlett died in Queensland in 1977.
