Description
Letters relating to the First World War service of Brigadier General Harold Edward Elliot, 15th Brigade. Some of the letters were censored by Pompey, and later his daughter Violet prior to donation removing details of a personal nature. The letters cover January 1917 - April 1919 detailing; his inability to buy Belle a car, the state of the trenches, his wife being unwell and his fear she will not be able to care for him when he comes back from war; his hopefulness that he will be able to persuade General Birdwood to regroup the brigades as they have so many; red poppies growing over the field of buried bodies; the sinking of a boat arriving from Australia by the Germans; two young men being shot at by a German sniper; the freedom of women in Europe, mentioning them driving and farming independently; preventing the Germans from owning Australia and hurting his children; the general congratulating his men on their fight; the lack of signs of war in peace country; the lack of involvement of Birdwood leading to improvements; the end of the war.
