Stretcher case awaiting bearers, Old Vickers Position
Description
A wounded soldier from the 58/59 Australian Infantry Battalion at Old Vickers Position, Bobdubi, New Guinea, lies on a stretcher waiting for bearers to remove him from the battlefield.
"It's the real thing all right. I've been up there and I know. [Hele's] a great artist and he's the type of artist the soldiers appreciate because he has obviously been right up close to the fighting. He couldn't have painted like that if he'd just sat back at base and talked to the boys as they come back. "
Private Henry Resnick, 1945
