Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840 : Charles Gibson, HMS Thunderer
Description
Naval General Service Medal 1793 - 1840 with the bar 'SYRIA'. The recipient's name is impressed in serif capitals on the edge. Obverse: The diademed head of Queen Victoria and the legend 'VICTORIA REGINA' with the date '1848'. Reverse: The figure of Britannia, holding a trident, seated sideways on a seahorse. The designer's name 'W Wyon' is under the neck and on the rear exergue. The medal is fitted with a 34 mm white ribbon which has dark blue edges.
History / Summary
Awarded to Boy Charles Gibson for service on HMS Thunderer, a 2nd rate ship of the line launched of 1831, which took part in the Syrian campaign of November 1840. Gibson also served in the Baltic, and in New Zealand. He later transferred to the coastguard.
