New Zealand Medal 1846-1847 : Ordinary Seaman C Gibson, HMS Calliope
New Zealand Medal. The recipient's name, rank and ship are impressed on the edge. Obverse: Diademed head of Queen Victoria with a veil covering the back of her head. Around the circumference is the legend 'VICTORIA D:G:BRITT:REG:F:D'. Reverse: In the centre the dates '1846 to 1847' within a laurel wreath with around the circumference, 'NEW ZEALAND' on the top and 'VIRTUTIS HONOR' at the bottom. The medal is fitted with a straight ornamental suspender and a piece of 32 mm ribbon of dark blue which has a 10 mm red stripe down the centre.
Awarded to Charles Gibson who served as an Ordinary Seaman on board HMS Calliope, a 6th rate ship of the line launched in 1837, during the New Zealand War between 1846 and 1847. Sixty three medals were awarded to members of the ship. Gibson also served in the Baltic, Mediterranean and in New Zealand. He later transferred to the coastguard.
