The 2013 Gallipoli Art Prize

Memorial puts on a show with the Australian Embassy
The Australian War Memorial, in collaboration with the Australian Embassy in Washington DC, will be launching a new art exhibition as part of the Embassy's 2013 Anzac Day program. The exhibition, titled Point of view - Afghanistan, will feature the digital film and photography of renowned Australian artist Shaun Gladwell, one of the Memorial's recent official war artists.

Artist-in-residence at the Australian War Memorial
The Australian War Memorial has received a grant of $17,650 from the Australia Council for the Arts to host Australian new media artist Baden Pailthorpe. The Early Career Residency program will see Pailthorpe join the Memorial in July 2013 as its inaugural artist-in-residence. During his three-month residency, he will undertake extensive research into the Memorial's important collection to develop a major new body of work pertaining to contemporary and historical conflict, and explore the impact of war on Australian society.

Students send messages of thanks to the battlefields
Students from all across Australia who visit the Australian War Memorial are sharing messages of thanks for Australian soldiers who gave their lives during the First World War. These messages, written on small wooden crosses adorned with a single red poppy, will be placed on the graves of Australian soldiers across the battlefields of the Western Front.

Memorial Council changes Roll of Honour criteria
Today the Council of the Australian War Memorial decided that all Australian servicemen and servicewomen who die on operational service, including non-warlike operations, will be included on the Roll of Honour. At its meeting in November 2012, the Council decided there was a need to canvas broader community and stakeholder opinion before making a final decision whether to retain or amend existing Roll of Honour criteria.

Keighran VC unveils Victoria Cross in Memorial's Hall of Valour
Corporal Keighran's Victoria Cross, on loan to the Memorial, is displayed with his accompanying medal group in the exhibition honouring all the Australians who have received the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in time of war. The Hall of Valour recognises the deeds of ordinary Australians under the extraordinary conditions of war.

United in Remembrance
Today the Director of the Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson, and the Chairman, Rear Admiral Ken Doolan AO RAN (Ret'd), welcomed the Prime Minister, The Hon. Julia Gillard MP and the Leader of the Opposition, The Hon. Tony Abbott MP, to the Australian War Memorial. This special occasion was to lay wreaths in remembrance at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier within the Hall of Memory. This event marks the opening of Parliament for 2013 and is a symbol of the nation's respect for those Australian service men and women who have given their lives in war and in peace.

New Director Brendan Nelson arrives at Memorial
Brendan Nelson started today as the new Director of the Australian War Memorial. Dr Nelson said that he was honoured to be working at such an iconic institution and that in his position as Director he would work hard to ensure that the Memorial continued to be relevant for all Australians, particularly as the nation approaches the centenary of the First World War.
