Description
Letters relating to the First World War Service of Brigadier General Harold Edward Elliott, 15th Brigade. Some of the letters were censored by Pompey, and later his daughter Violet prior to donation removing details of a personal nature. The letters cover the period July - October 1916 detailing; his arrival in France; the difference in trench warfare between France and Gallipoli; men being wounded by shells; Battle of Fromelles; men risking their lives to recover the body of Geoff Mccrae; the desire for the end of the war; the death rates; missing his old men but admiring his new men; raids on the Germans killing a number of them and capturing some of their weaponry; the training ground at an ancient monastery; the improvements of his men; recieving the order of St. Anne; congratulations from General Birdwood; his leave in England; the constant sound of guns.
