Next of kin plaque : Private E D Kendall, 20 Battalion, AIF
Description
Bronze next of kin plaque. The plaque shows Britannia and a lion together with the words 'HE DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR'. The name of the dead soldier, 'EDWARD DENIS KENDALL', is inscribed in raised letters within a raised rectangle. The initials 'ECP', for the designer Edward Carter Preston, appear above the lion's right forepaw.
History / Summary
Presented to Mrs Bridget Mary Kendall in 1922 to commemorate the death of her son 388 Private Edward Denis Kendall. He enlisted in 20 Battalion on 8 March 1915 and served on Gallipoli. He died of pneumonia in Egypt on 19 June 1916, aged 34 and is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery.
