Description

Portrait of (left) Private (Pte) 5646 Glyn Evan Payne, 28th Battalion; and (right) 5770 Pte Mervyn Payne, 16th Battalion, of North Fremantle, WA. A clerk before enlisting on 5 April 1916, Pte Glyn Payne embarked on 26 September 1916 on HMAT Surada with the 15th Reinforcements, and returned to Australia on 8 July 1919. His brother Pte Mervyn Payne was a storeman before enlisting on 16 March 1916. He embarked on HMAT Seang Bee on 18 July 1916 with the 18th Reinforcements. He was killed in action on 11 April 1917 in France, at the age of 20. He had written to his sister on 26th March 1917 that 'I will be moving on from here tomorrow to have another go at old Fritz. We have had him back a good deal lately. I will tell you all about this big push when I come home again.'
