Portrait of 3189 Private (Pte) Stanley Johnson Mears, 8th Reinforcements, 53rd Battalion, of Maitland, NSW. Pte Mears enlisted on 23 October 1916 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Suevic on 11 November 1916. He was killed in action on 1 March 1918, near Messines, France, aged 25 years. His brother 2627 Lance Corporal Percy Roland Mears, 35th Battalion, died of wounds on 12 October 1917, at Passchendaele, France.
