Studio portrait of 1582 Private (Pte) Hercules Lionel 'Bob' Clarke, of North Bondi, NSW. A dairyman in civilian life, Pte Clarke enlisted on 8 August 1916. He embarked for service overseas with the 4th Reinforcements, Light Trench Mortar Battery aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) from Sydney on 9 November 1916. Later transferring to the 19th Battalion, he died of wounds received at the Second Battle of Bullecourt, France, on 4 May 1917. One day previously, Pte Clarke’s younger brother, 1593A Pte Julius Ordo 'Ordo' Clarke, 19th Battalion, had been killed in action during the same battle. A third brother, 5993 Pte William Reginald Quintus 'Reg' Clarke, 2nd Battalion, survived the war and returned to Australia in January 1919.
