Studio portrait of 1593A Private (Pte) Julius Ordo 'Ordo' Clarke, of North Bondi, NSW. A labourer in civilian life, Pte Clarke enlisted on 8 August 1916. He embarked for service overseas with the 4th Reinforcements, Light Trench Mortar Battery aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) from Sydney on 9 November 1916. Later transferring to the 19th Battalion, he was killed in action at the Second Battle of Bullecourt, France, on 3 May 1917. One day later, Pte Clarke's older brother, 582 Pte Hercules Lionel 'Bob' Clarke, also of the 19th Battalion, died of wounds inflicted during the same battle. A third brother, 5993 Pte William Reginald Quintus 'Reg' Clarke, 2nd Battalion, survived the war and returned to Australia in January 1919.
