History / Summary

This brown canvas kit bag was used by the then Private (later Lance Corporal) Tom Lupton of the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) on his vovage to South Vietnam onboard the HMAS Sydney in 1965. These kit bags were well known for their ability to carry many items of a soldiers personal equipment such as his spare uniform, toiletries and civilian clothing. These kitbags were used when transiting between bases and they were not carried on patrols or ambushes in the jungle due to their impracticability, heavy weight and size.
