Shared Experience: Alan Sorrell (1904–1974)
Art and War
Sorrell volunteered for the RAF and was soon transferred to the camouflage section of the Air Ministry but was recalled in 1944. He developed a fascination for camp scenes, much in keeping with his pre-war paintings which recreated archaeological sites. “I have lived in them as an airman, visited them and flown over them as an Air Ministry Officer, and finally assisted in the siting and planning of them.”
