Media statement: Use of gender pronouns on Memorial social media

The Director of the Australian War Memorial, Mr Matt Anderson PSM, reaffirms there have been no changes made to the Memorial’s policy regarding the use of gender pronouns, when commemorating the service and sacrifice of our nation’s servicemen and servicewomen.

“There have been a number of tweets (not Facebook posts or, most importantly, the script read at the daily Last Post ceremony) that have been misinterpreted by some as such.

On a daily basis the Australian War Memorial honours one of our 103,000 fallen in a solemn and dignified Last Post Ceremony.  To date, more than 3,300 individual personnel have been commemorated, with over one million visitors in attendance and others watching online.

The staff of the Australian War Memorial will continue to honour all who have served, those still serving, and the families who love and support them.

Free tickets to the daily Last Post Ceremony can be booked online or, for those unable to visit the Memorial, they can also be watched on the Memorial’s YouTube channel.”
