Kapyong Diorama

We’ve created a diorama – or three dimensional work of art – showing a ‘frozen in time’ moment from the Korean War.

The diorama follows an important tradition which began with the famous series of dioramas in the Memorial’s First World War galleries. It depicts infantrymen from the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment fighting at the Battle of Kapyong in April 1951.

During the Battle the Battalion was instrumental in halting a 337,000 strong Chinese offensive that threatened the South Korean capital of Seoul.

While the Memorial has displayed battlefield dioramas since the 1920s, the model reinvigorates the tradition by using digital technology to recreate the sights and sounds of the battlefield and all diorama sculptures are based on actual portraits of Australians involved at Kapyong.
