Description
Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle, 2nd Model. Lock marked Crown over V+R and 1856 with service proofs. Barrel has French and English proof marks including a manufacturers stamp F*P within an oval. The rear sight bed is graduated in 100 yd steps to 400 and the a leaf sight to 1000 yds. Butt marked Arrow over 1861 within a circle and tang engraved N over 47. The stock is worn but it is complete. A white buff leather sling and correct ramrod which is marked E50 are fitted to this rifle.
History / Summary
This is a French contract weapon supplied to the British Government. Some were issued to the South Australian volunteer units.
