Private Tom Heels
Description
Tom Heels was a bricklayer before he enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 8 May 1916. Born in the Sydney suburb of Balmain in 1896 to Thomas and Sabina Heels, he was 21 when he enlisted. He left behind his wife, Doris, whom he had married in 1912, and embarked from Sydney with reinforcements to the 13th Battalion aboard HMAT Wiltshire on 22 August 1916. He also served as a member of the 13th Battalion Band. Heels survived the war and returned to Australia in August 1919.
