The lecture focused on two services -- 1. Transmission of information -- manual (foot orderlies, mounted orderlies, cyclists, motor cars) -- visual (flag signalling by semaphore, flag signalling by Morse code, lamp signalling, helio signalling, signals a ttached to balloons or kites, rockets, fires) -- electrical (telegraph along wires -- air line or cable, telephone along wires, wireless telegraphy and possibly wireless telephony) -- 2. The collection of information -- by actual view of the incidents -- by questioning prisoners -- by letters, uniforms, &c., on dead and wounded -- by intercepting signals.
