Description
Studio portrait of 2717 Private (Pte) Herbert John Maxwell Manson, 60th Battalion from Hildene, Seymour, Victoria. A 24 year old labourer with prior service in the Light Horse Militia prior to enlisting in the AIF on 19 September 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 2 October 1916 aboard HMAT Nestor (A71). Following further training in England, he joined the 60th Battalion in France where he was wounded and also experienced several periods of illness requiring hospitalisation in England. He was killed in action near Villers-Bretonneux, France on 27 April 1918 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux with others who have no known grave.
