Invasion of Leyte, Philippines
Description
On 20 October 1944 the United States 6th Army invaded Leyte, Philippines, landing on the east coast in vicinity of Tacloban, the capital. Two firm beach heads were established. On 21 October 1944 US Army Generals Krueger, Silbert, Hodge, took command ashore. 23 October 1944 General Douglas MacArthur restored Philippine civil government under President Sergio Osmena. USN and RAN (HMAS Australia and HMAS Shropshire) vessels shelled landing area prior to landing and escorted invasion fleet.
