Platypus IX
Description
The Platypus series of missions were carried out during the Second World War by members of the Services Reconnaissance Department (SRD) to support Operation Oboe 2, the Allied landings at Balikpapan, Borneo. The Platypus IX mission was to report on enemy activity in the upper reaches of Balikpapan Bay. The party under Capt. R. K. McLauren left Balikpapan on 12 July 1945 to a northern point where radio communications were set up with SRD Headquarters to report on enemy activity in the region. A result of the mission was intelligence on enemy barge traffic that led to the disruption and movement of Japanese troops.
