British War Medal 1914-20 : Private G W Stewart, 14 and 46 Battalions, AIF
British War Medal 1914-20. Impressed around edge with recipient's details.
George William Stewart was a 28 year old married fireman living in Footscray, Victoria, when he enlisted in the AIF in July 1915. With the regimental number 3900, he sailed on the troopship 'Ceramic' in November of the same year as part of the 12th reinforcements to 14 Battalion, but was too late to see service at Gallipoli. During the reorganisation of the AIF in Egypt after the evacuation of Anzac, Stewart was transferred to 46 Battalion, and moved with it to France in early 1916. In July 1917, while serving at Hill 63 in the Ploegsteert area of Belgium, he was wounded and evacuated to England. As his wounds proved to be serious, he was returned to Australia and discharged in December.
