Description

Collection relating to the service of QX16477 Corporal William J Gambier. The collection consists of copies of diaries, dated 1941-1945, written by Gambier while serving in North Africa. Gambier describes action at Tobruk, the Middle East, New Guinea and Borneo during his service with the 2/156 General Transport Company during the Second World War. The first part comprises irregular short entries of episodes at Bardia and Tobruk, including bombing raids at Tobruk. The second section commences some time after March 1944 and is in the form of a descriptive memoir with several dates rather than diary entries. The last entry is dated 3 November 1945 and was written in Labaum. Sections of the diary contain poems written about war by soldiers serving with Gambier.
