Description

One of a series of posters called 'Headlines of History' produced by Newseum and the Office of International Information Programs, US Department of State, in 2002 to mark the anniversary of the events of September 11. Many of the newspaper front pages featured in ‘Headlines of History’ were first seen together in the 12th of September 2001 exhibit 'Today's Front Pages' produced by the Newseum, Arlington, Virginia. ‘Headlines of History’ was shown in several places around the world. This poster depicts the front page of the An-Nahar published in Beirut, Lebanon, on the 12th of September 2001. The upper left image shows the site of the collapsed of the World Trade Center, after its Twin Towers had been hit by planes hijacked by terrorists. The buildings are reduced to rubble and ruins, only the base of a few walls remain standing precariously. The upper right image shows the second plane about to collide with the one of the towers, while plumes of black smoke rise from the building tower that has already been hit. The lower left image shows disorientated New Yorkers covered in ash and debris fleeing from the site of collapsing building as a cloud of dust and debris billows through the streets behind them. On the lower right is an image of smoke rising above the Pentagon as fire fighters battle the flames and a helicopter hovers above.
