Description
German New Guinea. A small group of unidentified members of the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) surveys the scene during the occupation of German territory by Australian forces. They are possibly reconnoitring in search of wireless stations. On 11 September 1914 a party landed at Kabakaul and successfully raided the wireless station at Bitapaka; this was the first fight in which Australian naval forces took part, and resulted in the first death of the First World War.
