Description

Hayes speaks of his service background and experience; selection for 2/2nd Australian Independent Company; deployment to Timor two months before the Japanese attack on Dili; capture, with other members of his section, in a Japanese ambush; escape after witnessing the shooting of four other members of his group; survival for seven months with the help of the local Timorese; evacuation from Timor and hospitalisation in Australia; return to service as a reinforcement with 2/11th Battalion in New Guinea; repatriation at the end of the war.
