Description

MacKenzie tartan wool twill kilt as worn by members of 27 Battalion South Australian Scottish Regiment. The inside waist is lined with a deep band of 200 mm wide cream cotton. The upper edge is bound with black cotton twill. The kilt fastens on the proper left with a single brown leather strap and white metal buckle, and on the proper right with two similar straps and buckles. The three buckles are sewn to the kilt with short straps made from glazed black linen. Six black plastic buttons are sewn around the outside upper waist for the attachment of braces. The set of the pleats at the back of the kilt is held in place by an internal horizontal strap of broad black elastic.

History / Summary

Kilt worn by Private Thomas 'Tom' Venables Holland while he was serving with 27 Battalion, South Australian Scottish Regiment, from 1939 to 1941. Holland had previously served in the school cadet corps at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide before joining the South Australian Scottish while studying at Adelaide University. He enlisted in the RAAF on 1 March 1941, at the age of nineteen. After training he joined 233 Squadron RAF, part of Coastal Command, as a Hudson bomber pilot. Flying Officer Holland survived the war and was discharged on 29 July 1945.
