Description

Smoke billowing from MV Zealandia (right) after she was attacked by Japanese aircraft during the first air raid on Darwin. During the raid a number of bombs fell close to her, before one fell through a hatch and exploded in a hold, causing a serious fire. Japanese planes also attacked MV Zealandia with their cannons and machine guns. Ammunition in one hold started to explode and the ship's fire pumps were disabled by another bomb. Two crew members died from wounds sustained in the attack.
