Framed display of twelve butterflies : Private E H Barges. 2/9 Battalion, AIF
Twelve butterflies displayed in thin wooden frame padded with cotton wool. From the top and left to right they are: Hypolimnas bolina, Papilio euchenor, Papilio ambrox, Elymnias agondas, Papilio aegeus (female), Graphium agamemnon, Cyrestis acilia, Papilio aegeus (male), Phaedyma sheperdi, Yoma Sabina, Papilio euchenor and Taenaris onolaus.
These butterflies were collected by N377945 Private Edwin Henry Barges who served with 2/9 Battalion, AIF. Barges was born in Spain in September 1916 and enlisted in the army from his home town of Yass, NSW on 18 January 1942. The butterflies were collected while Barges was serving in New Guinea and taken back to Australia to be framed while he was on leave in 1944. Returning to active service Barges was killed in action in Bougainville on 29 November 1944.
