Discharged Returned Soldier Badge: Private F J Miatt, 17 Battalion, AIF
Circular brass badge surmounted by a King's crown. The centre of the badge bears the AIF rising sun emblem and is surrounded by the text 'ISSUED BY THE DEPT. OF DEFENCE/ RETURNED FROM ACTIVE SERVICE'. The reverse is impressed with the maker's details and the serial number '173658'.
Associated with the service of 6340 Private Frederick James Miatt who served with 17 Battalion during the First World War. Miatt was born in Croydon, NSW in 1885 and worked as an engineer until his enlistment with the AIF on 26 October, 1916. He sailed for the Western Front on the troopship 'Suevic' on 11 November, 1916. After serving with 17 Battalion in France and Belgium he transferred within the 2nd Division to Headquarters. He returned to Australia on 7 July, 1919.
