The Air Force Memorial in Malta, which the Queen unveiled on 3 May 1954 during her tour of the Commonwealth. The memorial commemorates 2301 Commonwealth airmen who were killed in the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War and whose graves have never been traced. The 50 foot high travertine marble column is topped by a 7 foot 9 inch gilt eagle. The names of 211 Australians and 85 New Zealanders are among those listed on the bronze plates at the base of the memorial. Members of 78 Fighter Wing RAAF and 14 Squadron RNZAF took part in the unveiling ceremony.
