Description

A group portrait taken at Sakata prisoner of war camp, north-west Honshu on Christmas Day 1944. Australian and British servicemen are assembled on the snow-covered parade ground with Japanese guards and local civilians. Sleeping billets are identified to the left and the hospital and regimental aid post (RAP) is located to the right. Inmates later reported that this was the worst winter experienced in Japan in over 70 years.
