History / Summary

Awarded to William Raymond, who was born in England in 1836. Raymond served in the Crimean War with the 5th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Artillery. He emigrated to Australia aboard the Ivanhoe in 1863, and settled in Melbourne, Victoria, where he joined the local artillery volunteers. He did not stay long with the artillery and subsequently transferred to the Victorian Naval Reserve. In 1884 he was awarded the Long and Efficient Service Medal for 15 years service with the Victorian Forces. Raymond died in 1919.

His three sons served in the AIF during the First World War: 2257 Lance Corporal Alfred Raymond served on Gallipoli with the machine gun section of 13 Battalion, AIF, and later transferred to 4 Machine Gun Battalion, returning to Australia in October 1917 after sustaining shrapnel wounds to both feet; 3028 Private Reginald Raymond served on the Western Front with 31 Battalion, AIF, and returned to Australia in May 1918 after being wounded in the right arm and wrist in 1917; and 3019 Private Phillip Raymond, who also served in 31 Battalion and returned to Australia in 1919.
