Description
Portrait of 712 Private Gordon Binns, 13th Reinforcements, 2nd Machine Gun Company (of the 1st Machine Gun Battalion), of Yarraville, Vic, aged 18. After travelling to England on HMAT Suevic, he was taken on strength with the 6th Battalion, but almost immediately transferred back to 1 Machine Gun Battalion. He was wounded in action on 10 August 1918 when the 2nd Machine Gun Company was supporting the Australian attack on Lihons. He spent over a month in hospital after which he was transferred to the Australian Provost Corps. During his period of service, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Note he is wearing leather gloves and a wristwatch over the glove on his left hand.
