Schools savings campaign: join your school association and buy savings certificates
This British First World War poster was published by the Scottish War Savings Committee and is designed to encourage students and schools to invest in savings certificates. The main image is of a dove holding a banner in its beak with the word 'peace' printed on it. The poster aims to portray the message that the purchase of war bonds will bring about peace. In 1916, the British Government began to issue War Bonds as a way of raising money. During the First World War the British government needed to both reduce borrowing and to raise funds for the war effort. Consequently, the National Savings Movement was established in 1916 to encourage the British people to 'save and prosper'. The appointment of a committee for the organisation of War Savings in Scotland was made in April 1916. A similar committee for England and Wales was appointed two months earlier.
