Description
A group of Australian servicemen, accompanied by a local woman and boy, enjoying a drink in a tavern during their last leave in Tel Aviv, Israel. Identified, left to right: Wally, an Aboriginal soldier; NX2466 Corporal Malcolm Stuart Don, 2/1 Battalion; Peggy, a Polish Jewish lady; and 'Bluey' George. Corporal Don was later captured defending Crete against the German land and airborne invasion in 1941. He was interned as a Prisoner of War (no. 10237) in Stalag XIIIc in Hammelburg am Main, Germany, where he died of meningitis on 12 April 1943, aged 31.
