100,000 Additional war savers wanted by Christmas...
This poster was issued by the Scottish War Savings Committee to encourage an extra 100,000 members of the public to invest in war savings by Christmas 1918. The design is by American illustrator Charles Buckles Falls and it was originally created for the American Red Cross Christmas appeal of 1918. The image dominating the poster is of a candle, burning brightly against a window, with holly at its base. Below the image the text appears printed in red and blue.
Charles Buckles Falls (1874-1960) was a prolific and much loved American illustrator. He was one of over 300 artists mobilised via the Division of Pictorial Publicity to help with the propaganda effort. The American Red Cross was one of the biggest clients of the Division commissioning 100 poster designs during the First World War. Falls also contributed poster designs for the Second World War, most notably for an American Library Association campaign "Books Wanted", which he designed in 24 hours.
