Studio portrait of 1336 Private (Pte) Samuel Crichton McGowan, 5th Light Horse Regiment, of Gembrook, Vic. Pte McGowan enlisted on 9 June 1915 in Warwick, Qld, and embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAS Warilda on 5 October 1915, and was later promoted to Lance Corporal. He died on 7 August 1916, after being wounded at Romani, aged 24
