Studio portrait of 405 Corporal (Cpl) Samuel James Kerr, MM, 8th Light Horse Regiment, from Shepparton, Victoria. He was a 23 year old share farmer when he enlisted on 23 September 1914 and embarked for overseas as a Private from Melbourne on 25 February 1915 aboard HMAT Star of Victoria. After serving at Gallipoli, he went on to serve in the Middle East with the 8th and the 3rd Light Horse Regiments and was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for his actions at Huj, Palestine on 8 November 1917. Promoted Lance Corporal on 27 April 1917, he was then promoted Corporal on 1 December 1917 and Temporary Sergeant on 16 August 1918. Cpl Kerr arrived back in Australia on 20 October 1919.
