Description

Informal group portrait of officers and men of the 2/19th Battalion at a bush camp in the Malayan jungle, standing around a dixie. The Battalion was later captured by the Japanese in the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and most of the men were either killed in action (KIA) or held as prisoners of war (POW). Identified from left to right: unidentified; possibly NX60112 Warrant Officer Class 2 John James (Sonny) Loy, Company Sergeant Major (POW); NX35415 Acting Corporal (later Corporal) Barry Vincent McGinley (KIA in Malaya on 22 January 1942); NX12525 Major (later Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col)) Roland Frank Oakes (POW); NX12610 Lt Col (later Brigadier) Duncan Struan Maxwell, Commanding Officer; unidentified Brigadier; NX34902 Lieutenant (later Captain) Frank Garland Beverly (POW).
