Description

A large group of CARE trucks (donated by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR)) wait by a railway siding on the outskirts of Phnom Penh for a trainload of Cambodian refugee families returning from the refugee camps on the Thai border. A CARE International flag flies from the rear of the Toyota Landcruiser in the foreground and the door of the nearest truck displays the words 'Donated by UNHCR for the Cambodian Repatriation/CARE'. Once disembarked from the train, the refugees were taken to the UN reception centre at Phnom Penh where preparations made for their final movement to the location of their choice. The Repatriation Component of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) was responsible for the repatriation and resettling of 370,000 Cambodian refugees located in Thai border camps from April 1992 until March 1993, with only one fatality recorded.
