Description
UN Civilian Police members from Maubisse and Ainaro districts at Dili airport awaiting evacuation. Identified from left to right: Doug Chappina of the USA; and Martin Hess, Sandra Hoffschildt, and Shaun Bennetts of Australia. The Australian Federal Police contingent had been in East Timor to provide police monitors, election support, and military liaison as part of the UN Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) supervision of the referendum, held on 30 August 1999, to allow the East Timorese to choose between autonomy within Indonesia or independence. When violence erupted following the pro-independence ballot result, the UN staff were evacuated to Darwin.
