Mecklenburg-Strelitz Cross for Distinction in War, First Class
Description
Mecklenburg-Strelitz Cross for Distinction in War, First Class. Unnamed as issued. A slightly convex silver cross pattée with a beaded edge line to the arms. In the centre 'FUR TAPFERKEIT' (For Bravery) on two lines within a laurel wreath circle and '1914' on the lower arm. Reverse: Plain with a vertical pin brooch.
History / Summary
The Cross First Class for Distinction in War was established on 1 January 1915 as a higher class of the original Cross for Distinction in War (there had been no First Class in the Franco-Prussian War version of 1871). It was awarded, without regard to rank, for repeated acts of outstanding bravery before the enemy. This medal forms part of a collection assembled by the Memorial in the 1920s for display.
