Description
Collection consists of a notebook kept by Japanese reserve serviceman Higashiyama Nobuhiko. The notebook has been kept in the form of a diary and covers the period 14 October to 21 November 1942, which corresponds to his departure on the transport ship '843 Maru' from Japan to his transportation on the destroyer 'Fuun' from Rabaul to the Buna area. The diary describes Higashiyama's everyday life on and off the ships during his journey to Buna. It also records the convoy's frequent precautions against enemy submarines and his recollections of visiting a bar in Manila. There is a short passage written in English addressed to Mr Higasigama. The diary was pick up by an Australian soldier on the Buna battlefield.
