Description

Collection relating to the service of Lieutenant Edgar Sydney Worrall, 24 Battalion, AIF, Australia, at sea, Egypt, Gallipoli, France, England, Belgium, 1915-1917. Collection consists of photostat and carbon copies of a typed copy of a diary kept by Lieutenant Worrall while on active service, from June 1915 to December 1916; photostat copies of letters written by Worrall to his family, from July 1915 to September 1917; photostat copies of five letters of condolence sent to the late Lieutenant Worrall's parents. Copies made by Australian War Memorial. Location of originals unknown.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Lieutenant Edgar Sydney Worrall, 24 Battalion, AIF, who on 4 October 1917 was killed in action during an attack on Broodseinde Ridge in Flanders. Son of Henry and the late Elizabeth Ann Worrall, of 24 Kintore St., Camberwell, Victoria, Australia. Other biographical details concerning him are: medical student, of Prahan, Victoria; born Sydney NSW, 1 October 1897; educated at Wesley College, Melbourne; enlisted in the AIF on 17 June 1915; embarked on 26 August 1915 with 3rd reinforcements for the 24th Battalion; wounded in France, 30 June 1916. Two brothers saw service during WWI and survived - Flight Commander Henry Vernon Worrall DSC, Royal Navy Air Service & Royal Air Force, and 477 Sergeant Norman Rewa Worrall, 8 Light Horse Regiment, AIF.
