Description

Collection relating to the military career of VX20308 Lieutenant General Frank Horton Berryman, KCVO, CB, CBE, DSO, 7 Australian Division (formerly II Corps, Land Headquarters (LHQ), 2 Australian Divisional Artillery, 5 Australian Field Artillery Brigade, 14 Australian Field Artillery Battery, 18 Australian Field Artillery Battery, Royal Australian Artillery, 6 Australian Division), 1920-1953.

The collection consists of a mixed collection of official and personal papers related to the military career of Lieutenant General Berryman. The majority of the material is concerned with the later period of his service (1940-1954), however some papers do include reference to his earlier experiences (1915-1918). The collection, consisting of diaries, reports, files, notes, financial papers, correspondence and photographs, details the early campaigns in the Western Desert, notably Bardia and Tobruk, and later in Syria, his appointments to I and II Australian Corps in New Guinea, operational planning for Borneo and eventual attachment to General Headquarters-South West Pacific Area (GHQ-SWPA). The later papers document Berryman's appointment as General Officer Commanding (GOC) Eastern Command (1946-54) and secondment to the position of Director-General of the Royal Visit of Elizabeth II, 1954.
