Description
Collection relating to the service of 2858 Private Miner Ashton, 58 Battalion. Collection includes a letter from Ashton to his family written while on board SS Afric, whilst travelling from Australia to England.
History / Summary
SS Afric left Sydney 3 November 1916. Miner Ashton is listed in 7th Reinforcements on AWM 8 Embarkation Roll, AWM8 23/75/4. The letter contains misspellings. Although dates and times are not specific, Ashton describes shipboard life well.
Service Record of Private Miner Ashton contains a note which reads" "To Whom it May Concern -This is to certify that No. 2858, Private Miner Ashton, 58th Battalion, AIF, has submitted a Statutory Declaration to this office to the effect that his true name is : - MARTIN ASHTON."
