Collection relating to the service of Major Cyril Herbert Dodson Lane, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) and 18 Battalion, AIF, New Britain, Egypt, Gallipoli, 1914-1915. Collection consists of copies of letters and diary extracts written by Major Lane while on active service. Location of original letters and diary unknown.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Major Cyril Herbert Dodson Lane, who after serving in German New Guinea with the AN&MEF, was (as a member of 18 Battalion, AIF) killed in action at Hill 60 (Anzac) on 29 August 1915. Other biographical details concerning him are: electrical engineer, of Sydney; born Bondi, NSW 23 February 1888; educated at Armidale, NSW, school and Sydney Technical College, served for 6 years in the Senior Cadets and 8 years in the Citizen Forces of the Australian Military Forces, holding the position of adjutant, 21st Woollahra Infantry on the outbreak of war; appointed adjutant of the 1st Battalion, AN&MEF, 18 August 1914, and went to German New Guinea, receiving his discharge on 6 February 1915; joined the AIF as a Captain on 7 July 1915, promoted Major 1 June 1915, and embarked with the 18th Battalion on 25 June 1915.
