Description

Collection relating to service of Lieutenant Alfred Bailey Eades, 45 Battery, 12 Army Field Artillery, Gallipoli and France, 1915-1917. Collection includes letters sent home to family in Melbourne.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Served with the 45th Battery, Australian Field Artillery. Died of influenza at No 3 London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 12 November 1918. Clerk, of Essendon, VIC; born Essendon; educated at state school, served senior cadets and the Citizen Force Artillery; joined AIF 21 May 1915, sailing August 10, landed ANZAC on 13 October 1915 and stayed until the evacuation; in Egypt in 1916 was made a Sergeant Major of 46 Battery; arrived in France June 1916 and was appointed Second Lieutenant in Trench Mortars, 20 June 1916; promoted First Lieutenant in March 1917 and was transferred to 45 Battery; age at time of death 23 years 4 months. Was a cousin to General Brudenell White.
